What are Pokémon Mega Cards?

Pokémon Mega Cards Explained

Pokémon Mega cards were first introduced to the Trading Card Game (TCG) in 2013 with the release of the XY Series. They depict Mega-evolved Pokémon that have greater power than normal fully evolved Pokémon. Mega Pokémon cards made a return to the TCG with the release of the Mega Evolution Series in 2025.

These cards typically feature high HP, powerful attacks and bold artwork to reflect the strength of Mega Evolution.

Which Sets have Mega Cards?

Pokémon Mega cards were released in all 14 expansions of the XY expansion series which released between 2013 and 2016. Most sets featured just two or three Mega Pokémon, but the final set, XY Evolutions featured five. A total of 69 Mega cards were included in the entire series. Charizard was the most featured Mega Pokémon with 7 cards.

In 2025, after a nine year break, Mega Pokémon returned to the TCG with the release of the Mega Evolution Series. To date they have been included in all sets of that series. This series is seeing a far greater number of Mega cards being released than the XY series cards. The first three expansions of this series have a combined total of 75 Mega cards.

How to Identify Mega Cards

XY Series

Throughout the XY series, all Mega cards included the word MEGA in the top left corner above the evolution image. Additionally, a capital M was displayed in front of the Pokémon’s name and text displaying the Mega Evolution rule below the image. These cards typically have HP in the 200 – 240 range, significantly higher than most standard cards at the time. They also give up 2 prize cards when defeated rather than the usual 1 prize card.

The artwork for a significant number of Mega cards produced in the XY series featured Japanese lettering across the main image. This unique feature means they remain highly collectable to this day.

Mega Evolution Series

The Mega cards produced for the Mega Evolution series are similar in design to those produced during the XY Series. The word Mega is now shown in front of the Pokémon’s name while text highlighting the Mega Evolved form is shown under the HP.  The Mega Evolution rule remains in the same position and style as before. The HP of these cards remains significantly higher than most standard cards, but is in the 330 – 380 range. Mega Pokémon cards continue to give up 2 prize cards when defeated rather than the usual 1 prize card.

Like the artwork for the XY series, cards with Japanese lettering across the main image have returned for the Mega Evolution series and this feature makes these cards as highly collectable now as they were nine years ago.
