What are Lightning Energy Cards?

Lightning Energy Cards are one of the nine Basic Energy Cards that are used in the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG). They were introduced when the game was launched in Japan in 1996 and have been a feature of the TCG ever since.

Although there have been many design changes over the years, Lightning Energy Cards are always predominantly yellow and always feature the Lightning symbol of a black lightning bolt on a yellow circle. (Scroll to bottom for timeline and gallery of all designs to date).

Lightning Energy corresponds to Electric type Pokémon and their cards always include the Lightning Energy symbol in the top right hand corner. In order to use an Attack Move of a Lightning type Pokémon, the player will need to attach the specified number of Lightning and/or Colorless Energy Cards. The numbers required are indicated by the symbols to the left of the Attack Move.

A Lightning Energy Card can also be used when the Colorless Energy symbol appears because Colorless Energy can be any type of Energy.

The Ampharos V card from the Vivid Voltage set has two Attacks. To use Dazzle Blast the player must attach one Lightning Energy and one Colorless Energy. To use Damaging Spark, two Lightning Energy and one Colorless Energy are required.

Timeline of Lightning Energy Cards:

To date there have been 18 different designs of Lightning Energy Cards. Energy Cards were given numbers up to the release of the Sun and Moon series in 2017. The only Basic Energy cards to be given numbers from 2017 onwards are those that are released as Secret Rares.
