WATER ENERGY

What are Water Energy Cards?

Water Energy Cards are one of the nine Basic Energy Cards that are used in the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG). They were introduced when the game was launched in 1996 and have been a feature of the TCG ever since.

Although there have been many design changes over the years, Water Energy Cards are always predominantly blue and always feature the Water symbol of a black water drop on a blue circle. (Scroll to bottom for timeline and gallery of all designs to date).

Water Energy corresponds to Water and Ice type Pokémon and their cards always include the Water Energy symbol in the top right hand corner. In order to use an Attack Move of a Water type Pokémon, the player will need to attach the specified number of Water and/or Colorless Energy Cards. The numbers required are indicated by the symbols to the left of the Attack Move.

A Water Energy Card can also be used when the Colorless Energy symbol appears because Colorless Energy can be any type of Energy.

The Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX card from Chilling Reign has two Attacks. To use the Ride of the High King the player must attach two Colorless Energy. To use the Max Lance Attack, two Water Energy are required.

Timeline of Water Energy Cards:

To date there have been 18 different designs of Water Energy Cards. Energy Cards were given numbers up to the release of the Sun and Moon series in 2017. The only Basic Energy cards to be given numbers from 2017 onwards are those that are released as Secret Rares.
