Dynamax and Gigantamax What’s the Difference?

The Sword and Shield Games which released in 2019 introduced a new item called a Dynamax Band which is given to Players by Professor Magnolia. This special item can be used once during a Battle to change one Pokémon into a much larger version of itself. Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon forms are produced by using the Dynamax Band. This article explains the two forms and highlights the main differences between Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon.

What are Dynamax Pokémon?

All Pokémon in the Galar Region can be Dynamaxed but only in particular locations such as Stadium Battles. Max Raid Battles are always fought against Dynamaxed Pokémon and Trainers can use the Dynamax Band during these battles.

Once Dynamaxed, the Pokémon will grow in size, hasve increased HP and obtain Max Moves which deal high damage. However, after three turns the Pokémon character will return to its normal form.

What are Gigantamax Pokémon?

In the Sword and Shield Series, certain Pokémon posses the Gigantamax Factor. This is indicated in the Pokédex by a red X. When Dynamaxed during a battle, Pokémon with the Gigantamax Factor change both their size and form.

As the name suggests they grow to a huge size, sometimes by as much as 50 times their regular size. They also have  higher HP and G-Max Moves that deal considerable damage. There are 33 Pokémon known to have the Gigantamax Factor.

What’s the Difference between Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon?

There are a number of differences between Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon:

  1. Gigantamax Pokémon possess the Gigantamax Factor
  2. Gigantamax Pokémon change their form as well as their size.
  3. Only 33 Pokémon can change to Gigantamax Form whereas all Generation VIII Pokémon can change to Dynamax Form.
  4. Gigantamax Pokémon grow to a much larger size than Dynamax Pokémon
  5. Gigantamax Pokémon have G-Max moves while Dynamax Pokémon have Max Moves. G-Max moves are more powerful than Max Moves
